According to Chris Roy, a beat writer of the Maine Hockey Journal for the Panthers’ new AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates, the team has extended qualifying offers to four of their thirteen RFAs (restricted free-agents). The players that have received offers are Quinton Howden, Alex Petrovic, Corban Knight, and Garrett Wilson.
The RFAs that were not given contract offers by the Panthers includes Michael Houser, Jesse Blacker, Andrew Yogan, John McFarland, and Josh McFadden, among others, per Chris Roy who spoke to Eric Joyce, the GM of the Portland Pirates. The Panthers’ list of restricted free-agents also includes Jonathan Huberdeau and Jimmy Hayes who are currently in contract talks with the team according to GM Dale Tallon. Out of all of the team’s RFAs that didn’t receive offers, Michael Houser is the most surprising considering the Panthers’ thin goalie depth and the fact that he had been improving slowly but surely in the minors.[tweet https://twitter.com/Chris_MHJ/status/611600422256701440 align=’center’] [tweet https://twitter.com/Chris_MHJ/status/611607254228467712 align=’center’]
The deadline to extend offers to RFAs is Tuesday, June 30th, at which point the players are given until July 15th to either decline or accept the offer. If the team and players cannot reach agreements, they can file for arbitration to help reach an agreement which is what happened with Jimmy Hayes last off-season. Players that don’t receive offers become unrestricted free-agents when the market opens July 1 or teams can trade the rights to a player prior to the June 25th deadline.
