Update: Brad Boyes has cleared waiver and the Panthers have made the buyout official.
According to Bob McKenzie of TSN, the Panthers have placed right-winger Brad Boyes on waivers with the intention of buying out his contract.
The Panthers initially signed Brad Boyes to a one-year contract just prior to the 2013-14 season and he went on to lead the team in goals that year with 21, earning him a contract worth $5.2 million over the following two seasons. Boyes’s goal production dropped this year as he netted just 14 goals while playing primarily on the second and third forward lines and with various linemates.
This buyout is somewhat surprising considering Boyes’s production and cap-friendly contract, however the Panthers could be looking to make room for players like Rocco Grimaldi, Quinton Howden, this year’s first round draft pick Lawson Crouse, a player they plan to acquire via trade, or possibly even a free agent they plan to sign tomorrow when the market opens up.
