The NHLPA announced Wednesday that Florida Panthers’ defenseman Mike Matheson was one of 40 prospects and rookies selected to take part in this year’s Rookie Showcase on September 1st in Toronto. The event is in its 7th year and is held in collaboration with Upper Deck giving them the opportunity to video and photograph the league’s top prospects in their respective team’s jerseys for use in the creation of trading cards, memorabilia, and more.
Mike Matheson, the Panthers’ 23rd overall pick in 2012, played 5 games and recorded 2 assists for the team’s former AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage. The 21-year old Quebec-native made the jump into professional hockey when he signed an entry-level contract with the Panthers on April 1 and after finishing up his junior year at Boston College where he served as captain. Barring an incredible training camp next month, Matheson will likely start the season with the Panthers’ new AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates.
The Panthers have been well represented at the Showcase in past years with 2014 first-overall pick Aaron Ekblad being invited last year, Aleksander Barkov in 2013, Quinton Howden in 2012, Jonathan Huberdeau in 2011, and Erik Gudbranson in 2010.
