Between the Lines

The Panthers will face the Lightning for the second time in just over a week when the two teams convene at the BB&T Center tonight for a 7PM matchup. The last time the two teams met, the Lightning emerged victorious by a score of 4-1 after they capitalized on defensive error after defensive error committed by the Panthers. The lone goal for the Cats was scored by Vincent Trocheck, but only after the officials huddled to determine whether the puck crossed the line or not. Al Montoya was impressive and the 4 goals allowed were more indicative of the defense effort in front of him rather than his own play.

However, the Panthers cleaned up their play and defeated the Dallas Stars 4-2 this past Sunday thanks to goals scored by Jussi Jokinen, newcomer Reilly Smith, Connor Brickley, and Derek MacKenzie whose goal was an empty-netter. The game was more evenly-matched compared to the September 22nd matchup with the Stars which saw the Panthers take a commanding 3-0 lead halfway into the 3rd period before the men in green were able to respond. The Panthers enter tonight’s game with a slightly shorter roster than when they faced the Stars after sending Shane Harper, MacKenzie Weegar, and Mike Matheson to the AHL as well as releasing David Booth from his professional try-out contract.

Tampa Bay will arrive in South Florida coming off a 3-2 win at home against the Dallas Stars on October 1st. Nikita Kucherov scored the the first goal of the game and his 3rd of the preseason just 33 seconds into the game, but left after being injured by a hit during his second shift. Valtteri Filppula and J.T. Brown also tallied a goal each while goaltender Ben Bishop made 23 saves in his first full game of the preseason. Tonight’s game will be the final one of the preseason for both Florida and Tampa Bay, and both will face the Flyers in their season openers next week.
