Between the Lines

The Panthers opened their season with a huge 7-1 home win against the Flyers the other night that featured 5 different Florida goal scorers. Vincent Trocheck got the scoring started 1:23 into the 1st period after Jussi Jokinen dumped the puck into the offensive zone off of goaltender Steve Mason who then misplayed it and Trocheck charged hard to backhand the rebound five-hole. Nick Bjugstad scored the second goal just a few minutes later with a wrist shot from the top of the face-off circle on the power play and another power play goal came from newcomer Reilly Smith just a few minutes later after he made a mini spin move near the crease and flung the puck past Steve Mason. Jussi Jokinen tallied the 4th goal when Mason couldn’t recover from coming out to play the puck, leaving a wide open cage.

Jaromir Jagr added the 5th goal after Aleksander Barkov stole the puck from the Flyers just inside the offensive zone blue-line and fed him in the slot who then sniped it top-shelf. Jagr scored his 2nd goal early in the 3rd period after he tapped the puck in which had bounced behind goaltender Michal Neuvirth, and Reilly Smith added his 2nd goal of the game on a wrist shot from the slot thanks to a feed from Vincent Trocheck. Despite leading the Panthers in shots and generating more offense as the game went on, the Flyers were able to tally just one goal and it came on the power play early in the 2nd period. Despite playing place of the younger and speedier Quinton Howden, Shawn Thornton was effective in his role Saturday night against the Flyers. He fought 4th-liner Ryan White in the first period and went off again in the second period after nearly getting involved in a second fight with Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. With how chippy things were on Saturday night, it’s possible that Thornton could be back in the lineup Monday, especially if the Flyers decide to give certified tough guy Radko Gudas a spot in the lineup. Some other lineup options include sitting Connor Brickley in order to get a game in for Howden while still keeping Thornton in for the physical edge, or sitting Thornton and playing both Brickley and Howden. The fact of the matter is that starting the season with two games against a physical Flyers team wasn’t ideal lineup-wise. The Panthers will look to come out strong once again on Monday considering the Flyers probably will with it being their home opener and since they lost by a 6-goal margin on Saturday. It will be an important game for the Panthers to see if they can battle some adversity and continue what they started on opening night.

Updated 10/12/15: The Panthers will be playing the same line-up as opening night meaning Shawn Thornton will remain on the 4th line, and this is especially important considering Radko Gudas is in for the Flyers tonight. Gudas is notoriously physical and dirty so the Panthers will need Thornton’s presence tonight.

Who’s hot?

Reilly Smith and Jaromir Jagr both scored 2 goals on Saturday while Vincent Trocheck had a career-high 4-point night by recording a goal and 3 assists. Jussi Jokinen, Aleksander Barkov, and Brandon Pirri all had 2-point nights for the Cats. Roberto Luongo was impressive in his season debut stopped 38 of 39 shots including three huge consecutive saves in the 2nd period.
