The Panthers announced today that forward Rocco Grimaldi has been assigned to the Portland Pirates of the AHL. The 23-year-old California-native sustained a high-ankle sprain during the 3rd period of the Panthers’ pre-season game against the Stars back on September 22nd and has been on the injured reserve since the start of the season.Grimaldi just recently started skating again following the injury and it’s likely that this AHL stint will allow him to get back into game shape and continue his development a bit more before making the Panthers’ roster. The Panthers’ line-up seems to be set for the time being, so Grimaldi will have to wait a bit longer before returning to the NHL. Sending Connor Brickley or Quinton Howden down would leave a hole on the 4th-line and that wouldn’t be an ideal spot for Grimaldi considering he can get top-line minute in the AHL.
