Between the Lines

The Panthers will face the Anaheim Ducks for the first game of a three-game road trip in California. After losing a tight 2-1 game in overtime to the Capitals at home on Saturday, the Panthers will look to rebound by adding two points to their total. Jussi Jokinen scored the lone goal for the Panthers before Jay Beagle tied the game at 1 early in the 3rd period. During a back and forth overtime, Evgeny Kuznetsov cut through the slot in the Panthers’ zone and wristed the puck short-side past Al Montoya to win the game. Jaromir Jagr will likely return to the Panthers’ lineup after sitting out the past two games due to soreness on his right side, Coach Gallant said he worked out hard during the Panthers’ last game on Saturday, and he also participated fully in the team’s practice on Tuesday in Anaheim. There are no updates on Aleksander Barkov who broke a bone in his hand while blocking a shot just under 2 weeks ago, and he is likely not going to be back for at least another week or so.

The Ducks enter Wednesday’s game having won just 2 games on the season with their 2nd coming on Sunday against the Predators. They allowed 42 shots on goal, but their 3 consecutive 1st period goals were enough to give them the win. Frederik Andersen stopped 40 shots while Chris Stewart tallied 3 points to give the Ducks their first win in 5 games. Anaheim will be without star forward Ryan Getzlaf until at least the weekend as he recovers from an appendectomy that was performed last week, and Jiri Sekac will be unavailable as well after sustaining a sprained ankle.

The Panthers called up forward Garrett Wilson from Portland on Tuesday, however it’s currently unclear as to whether or not he’ll play with Jaromir Jagr likely returning to the lineup on Wednesday. It’s possible he was called up to fill in for Jagr in one of the back-to-back games coming up (Anaheim tonight, San Jose on Thursday) if he needs a day off. The only empty roster space left by Aleksander Barkov is being taken up by Rocco Grimaldi who was recalled before the Panthers’ game on Saturday vs. Washington.
