Between the Lines

The Panthers return home to the BB&T Center to face the Calgary Flames after going a dismal 0-2-1 on their 3-game road trip in California. After losing to the Ducks and the Sharks, the Panthers were defeated 4-1 by the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. Nick Bjugstad scored the lone goal for the Panthers, and the turning point in the game came when the Kings killed off a Panthers’ 5-on-3 advantage early in the 2nd period. They would go on to score 4 straight goals despite some some great saves by Roberto Luongo as the Panthers were once again unable to find their offensive or defensive mojo with both Aleksander Barkov and Dave Bolland out of the lineup. After sitting out three straight games, the Panthers sent Connor Brickley back to the AHL on Monday afternoon with Bolland returning to the lineup. Check out our full thoughts on the news by clicking here. We also recapped the week for some Panthers prospects, so click here to find out how they’re doing. Jonathan Huberdeau is still looking for his first goal of the season after not scoring in the first 14 games of the season while Nick Bjugstad has a goal and an assist in his past 3 games.

The Calgary Flames are coming off 5-2 win against the Penguins and have won 3 of their past 4 games after winning just 1 of their first 6. The Flames burst out of the gate scoring 3 goals in the 1st period as Mikael Backlund tallied 3 assists and Sam Bennett recorded 2 points in the first 20 minutes. Leading scorer Johnny Gaudreau finished the night with two goals and an assist as the Flames stymied the Penguins after taking an early lead. Gaudreau has 6 points in his last 5 games, alternate captain Sean Monahan has 3 points in his last 3 games, and Mikael Backlund has 5 points in last 2 games.

The Panthers are 4-3-3 in their last 10 games against the Flames and split the season series last year. The last time the two teams met was on January 9th when the Panthers won a wild, back and forth 6-5 game with Jonathan Huberdeau, Brad Boyes, Sean Bergenheim, Jimmy Hayes, Brian Campbell, and Tomas Fleischmann combining for the 6 goals.
