Between the Lines

The Panthers will face the Buffalo Sabres for the second time on Thursday after beating the Calgary Flames on Tuesday 4-3. Vincent Trocheck started the scoring for the Panthers by backhanding a rebound past goaltender Kari Ramo, but David Jones would tie the game for the Flames just minutes later. Reilly Smith would reclaim the lead for the Panthers by backhanding home a rebound following an Alex Petrovic point shot, and Aaron Ekblad scored shortly after on a beautiful cross-ice pass by Jaromir Jagr. The Flames would score 2 more goals, but Jagr tallied the 4th goal of the game for the Panthers and that would seal the deal. Gerard Gallant said on Wednesday after a morning skate the Aleksander Barkov will likely join the team for practice on Thursday for the first time since breaking a bone in his hand while blocking a shot 3 weeks ago against the Blackhawks. Gallant also said that he’s “on schedule” and just needs to work on shooting and stick-handling before returning to the lineup.

The Sabres are coming off a 4-1 victory against the defending Eastern Conference Champion Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night. Jack Eichel tallied a goal and an assist while Chad Johnson made 30 saves on 31 shots to guide the Sabres to their 4th win in their last 5 games. Rookie Jack Eichel has 5 points over his last 3 games and Tyler Ennis has 4 points in his last 5 games.

The Panthers and Sabres last faced off on October 15th, a game which the Panthers barely escaped with a 3-2 victory. Jaromir Jagr had a two-goal night and Aleksander Barkov tallied the game-winning goal to give the Panthers the victory.

  1. The next week works out to be very important for the Panthers. Tonight’s opponent, Buffalo is only a point behind the Panthers and beat Tampa Bay the other night. Then Saturday The Panthers are at Tampa Bay with a rematch Monday against the Lightning at BB&T. Encouraged to hear Barkov was skating and shooting today. It’s been a long three weeks. Despite a tough couple weeks, the Panthers are still in good position to make a move upward in the standings if they can stack up some wins against teams in the division.
