Between the Lines

The Panthers are headed on a one-game road-trip to face the Lightning for the first time this season and for the first time since Tampa was crowned as the Eastern Conference Champion last season. The Panthers played the Sabres at home on Friday night for their first of 7 games out of the next 8 that will take place at home, however it didn’t end how they wanted it to. After Brian Gionta scored his first of the season at the end of the 1st period, Jonathan Huberdeau did the same in the second period on the power play, breaking a 19-game goal drought which carried over from last season. The Sabres nearly had their second of the game just before the Huberdeau goal, but Gerard Gallant would use his coaches challenge and the goal was called off giving him a 75% success rate on 4 total challenges this season. The Sabres attempted to challenge Huberdeau’s goal for goaltender interference, but the replay showed that the left winger was pushed into the goaltender by a Buffalo skater, so the goal stood. Vincent Trocheck scored his 2nd goal in as many nights with 4 minutes left in the 3rd period, but the Panthers were unable to complete the comeback despite a valiant effort in the final minute. You can read about Vincent Trocheck’s successes this season in our latest article which can be found by clicking here. Injured forward Aleksander Barkov is very close to returning to the Panthers line as evidenced by his participation in the last two morning skates. On Friday morning, he skated as an extra forward on the 3rd line and has been working on his shooting and stick-handling.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are coming off a 3-1 win against the Calgary Flames, whom the Panthers defeated on Tuesday, and a 4-1 loss to the same Sabres that beat the Panthers on Friday. The Lightning have won 3 of their last 10 games, and Ben Bishop stood tall to make 30 saves on 31 shots against the Flames while Steven Stamkos recorded his 9th goal of the season, a mark good for 3rd in the league. Tyler Johnson has 4 points in his last 5 games and Steven Stamkos has 3 goals and 1 assist in his last 5 games.
