Between the Lines

The Panthers will meet the Kings for the second time this season after being narrowly defeated by the New York Rangers on Saturday night by a score of 5-4 in overtime. The Panthers came back from three deficits and never lead despite playing surprisingly well against the Rangers who are a top team in the league. Nick Bjugstad and Jussi Jokinen scored the first 2 Panther goals and the Rangers led 4-2 with under three minutes to go in the 3rd period until they were called for a penalty and gave the Panthers a man-advantage. The Panthers would then pull Roberto Luongo for an extra attacker and score two goals (Barkov and Jagr) in less than 4o seconds to tie the game at 4, and they would’ve taken the lead seconds later had Reilly Smith converted on a penalty shot. In overtime, the Panthers were called for too many men on the ice as Jussi Jokinen attempted to negate a 2-on-1 just as Jonathan Huberdeau was getting off the ice, and Rick Nash would complete his hat trick on the ensuing power play.

Aleksander Barkov has 2 goals and 1 assist in his past three games since returning from injury and has scored in 2 straight games. Jaromir Jagr has 4 points in his last 5 games and is one goal away from tying Marcel Dionne for 4th on the all-time goals scored list with 731. Jonathan Huberdeau has 6 points in his last 7 games.

The Kings will be playing in the 2nd game of a back-to-back after losing to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. They were down 3-0 early in the second period and Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar scored goals to bring the Kings within one. Justin Faulk made it 4-2 shortly after, but all the Kings could muster up after that was another Kopitar goal. Jhonas Enroth replaced Jonathan Quick to start the 3rd period after Quick gave up 4 goals on 21 shots, and Enroth was perfect to finish off the game. Jeff Carter has 2 goals and 4 points in his last 4 games, and Tyler Toffoli has 4 assists in his last 5 games.

The two teams last faced each other on November 7th in Los Angeles. Nick Bjugstad scored the lone goal for the Panthers while the Kings broke out for 3 goals in the 2nd period and another in the 3rd to seal the deal.
