The Panthers announced today that they’ve sent forwards Rocco Grimaldi and Garrett Wilson back to the Portland Pirates of the AHL and have called up forwards Logan Shaw and Connor Brickley. The Panthers have lost three games in a row and 9 of their last 12 so it’s likely they want to get some fresh bodies in the lineup to shake things up.
Rocco Grimaldi will return to the Pirates after playing 10 games and recording just one goal and no assists while playing in what was mostly a 3rd line role with the likes of Dave Bolland, Reilly Smith, Vincent Trocheck, and Brandon Pirri. While Grimaldi has certainly given his best effort every night, his offensive and defensive game just isn’t at the level of maturity it needs to be to thrive in the NHL. However, that’s not a bad thing, because he can go back to the AHL and get top line minutes, especially after his time on ice in his past three games have dipped below 10 minutes.
Garrett Wilson played in 6 games for the Panthers and although he hasn’t recorded any points, he managed to attain a +1 rating. Wilson played fairly well on the 4th line and did a good job defensively overall. He created some offense and nearly scored his first NHL goal a few times but he didn’t get the lucky bounces to go his way. He’ll likely find his way back to the Panthers lineup in the future as a 4th-liner once again.
Logan Shaw has been called up after an impressive stretch of games since he was sent down following his NHL debut against the Bruins on 10/30. In 8 games back with the Portland Pirates, Shaw has tallied 5 goals and 1 assist, including a 2-goal game against the Hartford Wolf Pack on 11/11. Along with him will come Connor Brickley who, as we all know, made the Panthers out of training camp and played really well in his 10 games with the team, however he was scratched from the lineup a few times and was eventually sent down on 11/9. Brickley tallied a goal and 3 assists in his short stay with the Panthers and even brought more energy, physical play, and some offensive ability to the 4th line. Brickley has 1 goal and 2 assists in 6 games since making his season debut for the Pirates on 11/11.
The Panthers announced that Dmitry Kulikov has been placed on the injured reserve. He sustained a leg injury after being checked into the boards by Lightning forward J.T. Brown on November 14th.
