Between the Lines

The Panthers will face the New York Islanders for the first time this season after losing for the 9th time in 12 games on Monday night to the Los Angeles Kings. After allowing the game’s first goal to Tyler Toffoli, goaltender Al Montoya was unintentionally run into by forward Nick Shore. Montoya sustained a neck/head injury but reportedly does not have a concussion, and the Panthers have not called up a goaltender suggesting that Montoya is fine. Aleksander Barkov tied up the game on the power play , but the Kings would get two more goals from Alec Martinez and Marian Gaborik to seal the deal.

On Wednesday, the Panthers called up Connor Brickley and Logan Shaw from the Portland Pirates and reassigned Garrett Wilson and Rocco Grimaldi. Logan Shaw has 7 goals in 13 games for the Pirates while Brickley has a goal and 2 assists in 6 games since being sent down in early November. At practice on Wednesday and Thursday, Gerard Gallant and the coaching staff shuffled up the forward lines by putting Brandon Pirri on the top line with Aleksander Barkov and Jaromir Jagr, while Reilly Smith, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Nick Bjugstad make up the 2nd line. The defensive pairings changed as well with Ekblad pairing up with Steven Kampfer, Erik Gudbranson with Brian Campbell, and Willie Mitchell with Alex Petrovic. Dmitry Kulikov is skating on his own, but is reportedly still about a week away from returning to the lineup, and when he does so, he’ll slot in for Kampfer.

The Islanders enter Friday night’s game having defeated the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night by a score of 3-1. Claude Giroux scored the lone goal for the Flyers just 4 minutes into the first period, but not before Casey Czikas tied things up with a shorthanded goal with less than a minute to go in the frame. John Tavares added his 10th assist of the season on Kyle Okposo’s second period goal, and Frans Nielsen tallied his 9th goal of the season with an empty-netter in the 3rd period. Matt Martin and Nick Leddy both received fighting majors in the 2nd period.

Tavares has points in 6 of his last 7 games including a three-point night on 11/16 and a two-goal night on 11/10. Jaromir Jagr has points in 6 of his last 7 games, Jonathan Huberdeau has points in 8 of his last 10 games, and Aleksander Barkov is on a 3-game goal streak with 4 points in his last 4 games.
