Between the Lines

Tuesday will be the Panthers’ first game home after a 5-game road trip which saw them gain 8 out of a possible 10 points. Their 5-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday night after a poor first period effort against the Devils doomed them for the remainder of the game as the Panthers would be unable to recover from a 2-goal deficit in the 3rd. Down by 2 goals at the start of the 2nd, Aaron Ekblad opened the scoring for the Panthers with a point shot off a face-off win by Aleksander Barkov, but the Panthers wouldn’t score again until Jonathan Huberdeau recorded his 3rd goal of the year following the Devils’ 3rd of the game. Mike Cammalleri scored early in the 3rd period to give the Devils a 4-2 lead, and that would be all scoring-wise for both teams. The Panthers dominated the 2nd and 3rd period, but Cory Schneider was a brick wall in net and the Panthers got off to a bad start in the 1st period.

Head coach Gerard Gallant put the Huberdeau-Barkov-Jagr line back together and that combo produced both goals for the Panthers. Nick Bjugstad remained home on South Florida on Sunday with an upper-body injured that has already forced him to miss 4 games, and he’ll reportedly miss Tuesday’s game against Ottawa as well. There is currently no clear timeframe for him or Alex Petrovic to return to the lineup.

The Ottawa Senators are coming off a 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers on Sunday. Marc Methot scored the lone Ottawa goal and Craig Anderson made 27 saves on 30 shots. Erik Karlsson is 4th in the NHL in points (32) behind Patrick Kane, Tyler Seguin, and Jamie Benn, and he’s tied with Kane for the league lead in assists with 26.
