Between the Lines

The Panthers will head to the Prudential Center for the second time in 11 days on Thursday after the Devils beat the Panthers 4-2 and ended their 5-game winning streak on December 6th. In that game, the Panthers’ poor first period doomed them as they went on to dominate the play in the final 2 periods and received goals from Aaron Ekblad and Jonathan Huberdeau. Since that game, the Panthers have gone 2-2-0 while the Devils have gone 2-1-1. The Panthers played the Islanders on Tuesday and won 5-1 with Reilly Smith, Aaron Ekblad, Vincent Trocheck, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Aleksander Barkov all recording goals, while the Devils and goaltender Cory Schneider shut out the Sabres 2-0. Smith and Jokinen had two-point nights for the Panthers while Aleksander Barkov had a goal and 2 assists.

Jaromir Jagr is expected to return to the lineup after missing two practices and Tuesday’s game with the flu. Barkov and Ekblad reportedly played sick, but you wouldn’t have guessed that considering they both had solid performances. We reported exclusively on Monday that forward Nick Bjugstad was out with migraines and Panthers GM Dale Tallon confirmed that to the media before Tuesday’s game. He said that Bjugstad had “a good day” on Tuesday although he’s still out indefinitely as they don’t know the reason behind the migraines. Veteran forward Dave Bolland played in his first game for the Pirates on Wednesday after being sent down for a conditioning stint. He was on the ice for both of the Springfield Falcons’ goals, made a good defensive play to sweep the puck out of the blue paint and save a shorthanded goal, and made a really nice spin-o-rama pass in the low slot to Kyle Rau who then nearly completed his hat-trick.
