Between the Lines

The Panthers will go up against the Calgary Flames for the 2nd time this season on Wednesday night two days after an emotional overtime loss which ended the franchise-record 12-game win streak. Despite scoring the first 2 goals of the game on former Panthers goaltender Jacob Markstrom, they were unable to get anything past him and eventually surrendered a late tying goal which forced overtime. Jaromir Jagr was called for a hooking penalty during the extra session which opened the door for Daniel Sedin to score the game-winner with a wrist shot from the point. Aaron Ekblad sat out in favor of Steven Kampfer after he took a big check into the boards by Matt Hendricks on Sunday against the Oilers. Hendricks was suspended 3 games for the check on Monday. Corban Knight was scratched for the first time since his call-up in mid-December and Wednesday’s game against the Flames will be the first time he’ll face them since being traded by them to Florida last January.

The Calgary Flames are coming off a 5-4 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Monday, a game which saw 3 goals in each period. The Flames scored 3 of their goals on the power play while the Sharks scored their 5 on just 18 shots. Jiri Hudler was out with a lower body injury, although he is expected to suit up against the Panthers who will be looking to continue their 13-game point streak.

The last time the two teams met was on November 10th when Jaromir Jagr’s 3rd period goal ended up being the game-winner in a 4-3 affair.

Assistant coach Mike Kelly will be coaching the Panthers against Calgary with head coach Gerard Gallant attending his mother’s funeral in Summerside, PEI.

Cats on the Prowl posted a new article on Monday talking about the end of the Panthers’ 12-game win streak and why we should be happy – not upset – with the position the team is now in as well as a look at what the 2nd half of the season holds. Check it out by clicking here.
