Panthers Prospect Update #14: 1/11 – 1/17

Welcome to the 14th Panthers Prospect Update where we’ll recap how some of the players in the Panthers’ system have played over the past week, beginning 1/11 and ending 1/17.

Portland Pirates

  • Record since 1/11: 3-0-0
  • Current record: 23-13-1
  • Won 5-1 against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on 1/15

    • Cameron Gaunce scored his 1st goal of the season and his 1st as a member of the Portland Pirates
    • Garrett Wilson scored his 2nd goal in as many games
    • Greg McKegg tallied his 7th goal of the season and had a 3-point night
    • Shane Harper scored his 6th goal of the season
    • Mike McKenna won his 11th consecutive game, which tied him for the Portland Pirates franchise record, by making 29 saves on 30 shots
    • The Pirates went 1 for 3 on the power play

  •  Won 3-1 against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on 1/16

    • Garrett Wilson scored his 3rd goal in his last 3 games
    • Dylan Olsen scored his 2nd goal of the season
    • The Pirates went 1 for 3 on the power play
    • Mike McKenna won his 12th consecutive game, which is a Portland Pirates franchise record, by making 21 saves on 22 shots

  •  Won 2-1 against the Providence Bruins on 1/17

    • Brent Regner scored his 2nd goal of the season
    • Shane Harper tallied his 150th career AHL point with a primary assist on the Regner goal
    • Rob Schremp won the game with an overtime goal
    • Sam Brittain made a career-high 45 saves on 46 shots for the victory
    • The Pirates went 1 for 2 on the power play

Lawson Crouse

Kingston Frontenacs (OHL), Left Wing

Season stats: 25 games, 10 goals, 18 assists, 28 points

  • In his first game back on 1/15 after participating in the World Juniors tournament, Crouse tallied two assists including one on a goal by fellow Panthers prospect Juho Lammikko.
  • On 1/16, Juho Lammikko returned the favor from the night before and set up Crouse for a goal in the slot.
  • Crouse tallied an assist on 1/17 after his slapshot from the point went wide and was put into the net off the rebound by Michael Dal Colle.
  • Crouse has a 4-game point streak during which he 1 goal and 5 assists.


Juho Lammikko

Kingston Frontenacs (OHL), Left Wing

Season stats: 35 games, 11 goals, 19 assists, 30 points

  • Scored a goal, which was assisted by Lawson Crouse, in his 3rd game back after participating in the World Juniors tournament.
  • Assisted on a goal by Crouse the next day (see GIFs above).

Jayce Hawryluk

Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL), Right Wing

Season stats: 30 games, 18 goals, 20 assists, 38 points

  • Played in his first game on 1/15 since serving a 5-game suspension and tallied 2 assists
  • Also tallied an assist on the power play the next night against Moose Jaw


Ian McCoshen

Boston College (NCAA), Defenseman

Season stats: 22 games, 5 goals, 7 assists, 12 points

  • Had a 4-point night on 1/15 against Boston University…tallied 2 goals (including the game-winner and one empty-netter) and 2 assists.
  • It was the second multi-goal game of his career and the first game of his career where he finished with more than 2 points.
  • Followed up the performance with an assist on the only Boston College goal on 1/16.


Matt Buckles

Cornell University (NCAA), Center

Season stats: 17 games, 5 goals, 2 assists, 7 points

  • Scored the first 2 goals of the game against Union College in a span of just 9 minutes on 1/16…his first multi-goal game of his college career.

Ed Wittchow

University of Wisconsin (NCAA), Defenseman

Season stats: 20 games, 0 goals, 2 assists, 2 points

  • Tallied his first 2 assists (and points) of the season is back to back games on 1/15 and 1/16.
  • On 1/15, he assisted on the game-tying goal in the 3rd period.
  • On 1/16, he assisted on the only goal of the game for Wisconsin which came while shorthanded.


Denis Malgin

ZSC Lions (NLA), Center

Season stats: 30 games, 4 goals, 7 assists, 11 points

  • Scored 2 goals in 6 minutes on 1/17 against HC Ambri-Piotta


Samuel Montembeault

Blainville-Boisbriand Armada (QMJHL), Goaltender

Season stats: 27 games, 10-15-0 record, 2.66 GAA, .889 SV%

  • Came in at the start of the 3rd period to relieve the starting goaltender on 1/13 vs. Victoriaville and allowed 2 goals on 9 shots.
  • Started on 1/15 and allowed just 2 goals on 19 shots for the victory vs. Shawinigan.
  • Started on 1/17 and earned a shutout vs. Baie-Comeau by stopping all 26 shots

Ryan Bednard

Youngstown Phantoms (USHL), Goaltender

Season stats: 19 games, 10-3-3-1 record, 2.57 GAA, .909 SV%

  • Made 32 saves on 34 shots against Dubuque for his 10th victory of the season

Karch Bachman

Chicago Steel (USHL), Left Wing

Season stats: 26 games, 9 goals, 4 assists, 13 points

  • Scored the game-winning goal for the Steel on 1/17 vs. Muskegon


Michael Downing

University of Michigan (NCAA), Defenseman

Season stats: 19 games, 3 goals, 10 assists, 13 points

  • Extended his point streak to 3 games by recording assists in back to back games on 1/15 and 1/17 against Ohio State.

Patrick Shea

Kimball Union Academy (USHS), Center

Season stats: 19 games, 13 goals, 23 assists, 36 points

  • Recorded assists in consecutive games on 1/13 against Vermont Academy and 1/17 against Tabor Academy.
