Between the Lines

The Panthers will face the Lightning for the 2nd time in less than a week on Saturday night in Sunrise. The Panthers are fresh off a 4-0 shutout of the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks. Reilly Smith, Brian Campbell, and Quinton Howden each tallied 1st period goals while Aaron Ekblad scored the 4th in the 2nd period of his first game back from an upper-body injury. Roberto Luongo earned his 72nd career shutout putting which put him in sole possession of 11th place on the all-time shutouts list. The Lightning will arrive in South Florida having defeated the Blackhawks on Thursday night by a score of 2-1 which ended Chicago’s 12-game winning streak.

Brandon Pirri was scratched for the first time this season on Friday after having scored just twice over the past month. Pirri, who scored 22 goals last season has seen a big drop in offensive production this season and has started to appear in trade rumors over the past couple of days. Gerard Gallant denied that the scratch was related to an imminent trade, although it’s certainly a possibility.

Roberto Luongo will start in both games of  a back-to-back series for the first time this season and captain Willie Mitchell is expected to miss his 2nd consecutive game with an undisclosed injury. Dave Bolland hasn’t skated in over a month and is still not expected back (if at all) until at least after the All-Star Break.
