Between the Lines

The Panthers will face the Penguins for only the 2nd time this season on Saturday night in Sunrise. Florida is coming off their 5th straight win on Thursday night against the Detroit Red Wings and it came by a score of 6-3, giving the Panthers 4 or more goals in each of their last 5 games for the first time in franchise history. Brandon Pirri returned to the lineup and tallied a goal and an assist while Jaromir Jagr, Aleksander Barkov, and Vincent Trocheck (twice) lit the lamp to propel the Panthers past the Red Wings and to a 7-point lead atop the Atlantic Division. The Panthers extended their winning streak with Aaron Ekblad in the lineup to an incredible 17 games and their record when scoring 3 or more goals to 22-0-1.

The Penguins will be playing their 2nd game of a back-to-back after facing the Lightning on Friday night. Pittsburgh was handed a 6-3 loss despite putting 30 shots on net and goals from Hornqvist, Crosby, and Cullen. The Penguins entered Friday’s game riding a 4-game win streak, however Tampa’s offensive onslaught led to starting goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury being pulled just 9 minutes into the 2nd period. Pittsburgh will be without Evgeni Malkin who is dealing with a nagging lower-body injury.

Brent Regner is expected to make his NHL debut with Erik Gudbranson being doubtful due to an undisclosed injury he’s been playing through since the Panthers game against Toronto. Regner was called up from the AHL’s Portland Pirates on Friday afternoon.

The two teams last met on October 20th when the Penguins won in overtime thanks to an Evgeni Malkin power play goal.

  1. Word in Pittsburgh is Zatkoff is starting ahead of Fleury…Penguins have been maddeningly inconsistent…Malkin out with lower body injury…Sorry to hear Gudbranson is on the shelf…Hope the callup is up to the task.
