Between the Lines

Following a short two-game homestand, the Panthers are back on the road for two games in two nights with the first coming against the Red Wings on Monday. The Panthers are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to the Penguins on Saturday night, a game in which they were 5 minutes away from winning. Jussi Jokinen opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the season in the 2nd period and Aleksander Barkov recorded his 16th goal of the season on a shorthanded breakaway to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead late in the 3rd. They then surrendered a couple of goals in a span of just a few minutes and headed to overtime. Jussi Jokinen was called for hooking after the Penguins rushed out of the opening faceoff and nearly got a breakaway. Kris Letang would eventually score the game-winner with less than a minute left on the power play.

Brent Regner made his NHL debut against the Penguins and played a solid game. His skating was impressive, he protected the net well, and was able to keep the play alive in the offensive zone several times. Erik Gudbranson is not on the Panthers’ road trip and will miss both games of the back-to-back with an upper-body injury. Willie Mitchell was said to be unlikely to travel with the team, so if he didn’t, he’ll miss both Monday’s game and Tuesday’s game.

The Red Wings are fresh off a 5-1 win over the Islanders on Saturday which saw 5 different goal-scorers including Tomas Jurco, Kyle Quincey, Mike Green, Tomas Tatar, and Dylan Larkin. Petr Mrazek is expected to get the start for the Red Wings and Al Montoya is confirmed to be getting the start in the first game of a back-to-back.

The two teams last met on Thursday when the Panthers downed Detroit by a score of 6-3 thanks to 3-point nights by Vincent Trocheck and Jaromir Jagr, and 2-point nights for Brandon Pirri, Jussi Jokinen, and Reilly Smith.
