The Panthers announced today that Garrett Wilson has been recalled from the Portland Pirates after Aleksander Barkov sustained a possible concussion in the 2nd period of Monday’s loss to Detroit.
Garrett Wilson will replace Aleksander Barkov for the time being after the young center took a check to the head on Monday night. A league spokesperson told the media today that Justin Abdelkader, the Red Wings play who delivered the hit, will not face supplemental discipline.
This will be Wilson’s second stint this season with the Panthers. He was last recalled on November 2nd to take the spot of Barkov when he suffered a broken hand against Chicago, and he registered no points in 6 games played before being returned to the AHL. The Panthers placed Eric Gudbranson on the injured reserve, and seeing as it’s likely retroactive to his last game on February 4th, he’ll be eligible to return as early as Friday’s game against St. Louis.
Wilson has 7 goals and 13 assists in 37 AHL games this season.
Cats on the Prowl reported exclusively this morning on Twitter that Wilson had been recalled by the Panthers. We also learned that Aleksander Barkov arrived back in Florida today to be further examined by doctors since he was ruled out last night for Tuesday’s game.
