Between the Lines

The Panthers return home after a 2-game road trip which concluded on Tuesday night with a 7-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres. The first 6 goals were each scored by 6 different players until Reilly Smith got his second of the night thanks to an empty-netter. The Panthers were without Aleksander Barkov for the 2nd game after he was sent home following a check to the head by Detroit forward Justin Abdelkader. Willie Mitchell hasn’t played in over a month after suffering an undisclosed injury, and Erik Gudbranson has been skating on his own despite missing the past 3 games with an upper-body injury. Gudbranson and Barkov are expected to return by Monday while Mitchell, Cats on the Prowl has learned, may be out for at least another week without the timeline being unclear after that.

The St. Louis Blues arrive in Florida having lost 4 of their last 6 games including their most recent one 2-1 to the Winnipeg Jets in a shootout. Defenseman Colton Parayko scored the lone Blues’ goal in the 2nd period while Brian Elliot made 32 saves on 33 shots.

The two teams last met on December 1st in St. Louis when Derek MacKenzie scored 2 consecutive goals to lead the Panthers to a 3-1 victory, snapping the Blues’ 6-game winning streak against the Panthers.

The Panthers called up John McFarland from the Portland Pirates on Friday morning and it’s likely that he’ll suit up for his first NHL game against the Blues. Corban Knight has been sent down to the AHL and therefore will not play.
