Between the Lines

The Panthers will face the Arizons Coyotes in the final game of a 6-game home-stand at the BB&T Center on Thursday night. The game comes 5 days after the Panthers’ last game which was a 3-1 win on Saturday night. Jaromir Jagr tallied two goals – the 741st and 742nd of his career – and Reilly Smith recorded his 19th of the season while Mike Matheson and Kyle Rau made their NHL debuts. Roberto Luongo made 29 saves on 30 shots in his first start in a week and after allowing 5 goals in his 2 previous starts.

Willie Mitchell missed his 13th consecutive game with an apparent concussion, Erik Gudbranson missed his 8th consecutive game with an upper-body injury, Aleksander Barkov missed his 6th consecutive game with a concussion, and both Quinton Howden and Brandon Pirri missed their 3 consecutive game with injuries as well. Jonathan Huberdeau left Saturday’s game in the 1st period after being checked awkwardly and hitting his head on the ice. He’s expected to miss at least the next week and may not be back until the Panthers return home again on March 7th. Both Barkov and Gudbranson are expected to return to the lineup on Thursday night against Arizona.

The Arizona Coyotes are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Lightning in Tampa on Tuesday, a game which had a Panthers scout in attendance as the trade deadline nears. The Panthers likely had their eyes on Mikkel Boedker whom they’re rumored to be in trade talks with Arizona for. Louis Domingue made 34 saves on 36 shots while Jordan Martinook scored the lone Coyotes goal in the 3rd period.
