Between the Lines

The Panthers and Avalanche will face each other for the 2nd and final time this season on Thursday night in Colorado. The Panthers defeated the Jets on Tuesday night by a score of 3-2 thanks to 2 goals from Reilly Smith and one from Jaromir Jagr after a slow start to the game. Jiri Hudler and Teddy Purcell made their Panther debuts, and although Hudler didn’t look bad, Purcell got better as the game went on and looked impressive in the 3rd period. Purcell notched his first point as a Panther with a secondary assist on a goal by Smith in the 3rd period. We’ve been told it’s unlikely that Purcell and Hudler will make it in time to play in Thursday’s game as they need to sort out issues with their work visas in order to play in the United States. As of Wednesday night, neither one was with the team in Colorado. Al Montoya, who was hit in the head on Sunday against Minnesota, apparently has a stiff neck and should be good to back up Luongo on Thursday night.

The Avalanche are coming off a 6-3 loss to the Wild on Tuesday night, a game in which saw Jarome Iginla, Chris Bigras, and Cody McLeod score. Semyon Varlamov was pulled after allowing 3 goals on 12 shots, so Calvin Pickard is said to be starting against the Panthers.

The two teams last met on October 27th when Vincent Trocheck scored 2 consecutive power play goals to lead the Panthers to a 4-1 victory over the Avalanche on home ice.
