Between the Lines

The Panthers and Senators will meet for the 4th time this season on Thursday. Florida is coming off a 5-4 overtime loss to the Atlantic Division rival Boston Bruins on Monday night. After going down 4-1 in the 1st period with a goal from Aleksander Barkov, the Panthers stormed back and tied the game at 4 in the 3rd period thanks to 2 goals from Jiri Hudler and 1 from Jussi Jokinen. In overtime, Lee Stempniak sent a wrist shot past Al Montoya and ended the game following several back-and-forth scoring opportunities.

Jonathan Huberdeau returned to the lineup after a 6-game absence due to a concussion sustained on February 20th and recorded 2 primary assists while Teddy Purcell missed the game with a minor groin injury. Purcell is day-to-day and his status is unclear for Thursday’s game after missing practice on Wednesday. Derek MacKenzie practiced fully with the team on Wednesday and is expected to return to the lineup on Thursday for the first time since February 27th against Columbus. Willie Mitchell is likely to return sometime next week; he’s missed nearly 2 months with a concussion.

The Senators are coming off a 4-3 shootout loss to the Hurricanes on Tuesday during which Ryan Dzingel, Mark Stone, and Zack Smith each registered a goal. Ottawa blew a 2-0 first period lead as well as a 3-2 second period lead as Andrew Hammond allowed 3 goals on 37 shots.

The two teams last met on January 7th in Ottawa when the Panthers won 3-2 to earn their 11th consecutive win. Vincent Trocheck, Reilly Smith, and Aleksander Barkov each recorded a goal in the victory. The Panthers own a 2-1-0 record in the season series thus far.
