Panthers Prospect Update #22: 3/7 – 3/13

Welcome to the 22nd edition of the Panthers Prospect Update! Here, we’ll recap the past week of hockey (3/7 – 3/13) for Panthers prospects and players in college, juniors, international leagues, and the Portland Pirates, the team’s AHL affiliate.

Portland Pirates

  • Record since 3/7: 0-2-1
  • Current record: 31-25-5
  • Lost 9-2 to the Toronto Marlies on 3/11

    • Shane Harper returned from an injury that kept him out of the lineup for over a month and tallied an assist
    • Greg McKegg and Wade Megan scored the only two goals for Portland
    • Mike McKenna allowed 3 goals on 10 shots in the first 10 minutes and was replaced by Sam Brittain who allowed 6 goals on 28 shots
    • The Pirates went 0/2 on the power play

  •  Lost 3-2 to the Springfield Falcons on 3/12

    • Shane Harper scored the 2 goals for the Pirates for his 7th and 8th goals of the season
    • Mike McKenna made 31 saves on 33 shots through regulation and overtime and just one goal on 8 shootout attempts
    • The Pirates went 0/4 on the power play

  • Lost 4-3 to the Hartford Wolf Pack on 3/13

    • Matt MacKenzie, a player signed to a try-out contract by Portland, scored his first goal of the season
    • MacKenzie Weegar scored his 6th goal of the season and Rob Flick scored his 7th goal of the season
    • The Pirates surrendered a 3-2 lead in the 3rd period
    • Mike McKenna allowed 4 goals on 29 shots
    • The Pirates went 1/2 on the power play
  • Next 3 games for Portland

    • vs. Hartford Wolf Pack, 3/18 (away)
    • vs. Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 3/19 (away)

Jayce Hawryluk

  • Registered 2 goals and 1 assist against Saskatoon on 3/11
  • Scored a goal and tallied 2 assists on 3/12 against Saskatoon
  • Reached the 100 point mark for the first time in his WHL career
  • Is 4th in the WHL in scoring despite having played in 15 fewer games than the players in the top 3


Michael Downing

University of Michigan (NCAA), Defenseman

Season stats: 32 games, 3 goals, 15 assists, 18 points

  • Recorded assists in back-to-back games against Penn State on 3/11 and 3/12
  • Has 4 assists in his last 6 games

Lawson Crouse

Kingston Frontenacs (OHL), Left Wing

Season stats: 47 games, 22 goals, 33 assists, 57 points

  • Tallied an assist on 3/9 on a Juho Lammikko goal against Oshawa
  • Recorded another assist on 3/12 against Ottawa


Juho Lammikko

Kingston Frontenacs (OHL), Center

Season stats: 57 games, 20 goals, 31 assists, 51 points

  • Scored a goal and recorded 1 assist on 3/9 against Oshawa
  • Went 18/29 in the face-off circle on March 11th against Mississauga
  • Tallied an assist on 3/12 against Ottawa


Samuel Montembeault

Season stats: 46 games, 17-26-0 record, 2.65 GAA, .901 SV%

  • Made 10 saves on 10 shots in relief on 3/10
  • Allowed 4 goals on 22 shots in a loss on 3/11
  • Made 17 saves on 18 shots on 3/13 for his 17th win of the season

Dryden Hunt

Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL), Left Wing

Season stats: 69 games, 55 goals, 56 assists, 111 points

  • Scored 2 goals and recorded an assist on 3/7 against Swift Current (one empty-netter)
  • Scored a goal on 3/11 against Regina


Matt Buckles

Cornell University (NCAA), Center

Season stats: 31 games, 8 goals, 3 assists, 11 points

  • Scored his 7th goal of the season on 3/12 against Quinnipiac
  • Scored his 8th goal of the season the next day on 3/13 against Quinnipiac


Ryan Bednard

Youngstown Phantoms (USHL), Goaltender

Season stats: 32 games, 16-8-4 record, 2.56 GAA, .914 SV%

  • Made 44 saves on 47 shots on 3/10 against Bloomington in a loss…set a personal season-high for saves in a game (previous was 43 on 10/16).

Denis Malgin

GCK Lions U20 (Elite Jr. A, Sweden), Center

Season stats: 38 games, 5 goals, 12 assists, 17 points (with ZSC Lions)

  • After being swept in the playoffs with the ZSC Lions, Malgin went to play for the U20 farm team and tallied 1 goal on 3/13 to help GCK advance to the final round of the playoffs.

Eddie Wittchow

University of Wisconsin (NCAA), Defenseman

Season stats: 31 games, 0 goals, 6 assists, 6 points

  • Recorded assists in back-to-back games against Minnesota on 3/11 and 3/12
  • Has 4 assists in his last 6 games
