Between the Lines

The Panthers will return home to face the Red Wings for the third time in just over a month on Saturday night. Florida is fresh off a 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night, a game that included two empty-net goals from Jaromir Jagr and Teddy Purcell. The other two goals were scored by Jussi Jokinen off some very odd bounces while Roberto Luongo made 32 saves on 33 shots in a bounce-back game for him. Jokinen returned to the lineup after missing the game against the Canadiens on Tuesday with a lower-body injury while Derek MacKenzie and Erik Gudbranson are expected to be out for at least the next week-and-a-half to 2 weeks.

The Red Wings are coming off a 3-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night in which Luke Glendening, Henrik Zetterberg, and Darren Helm all scored in front of Jimmy Howard who made 27 saves on 28 shots. Detroit currently sits 4th in the Atlantic Division and has been jockeying for the 2nd wildcard spot in the East with the Philadelphia Flyers who are making a late-season surge.

The two teams last met on February 8th in Detroit when Pavel Datsyuk scored twice, Tomas Tatar scored once, and Petr Mrazek made 23 saves to lead the Red Wings to a 3-0 shutout over the Panthers. Jared Coreau is expected to back up Jimmy Howard with Petr Mrazek being out with an illness.

Jakub Kindl, who the Panthers acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline a few weeks ago, will face the Red Wings for the first time since the trade. Kindl was a 1st-round pick of the Red Wings back in 2005 and played in 273 games during his time with the team. He was in the lineup against the Panthers on February 8th and recorded 1 assist.
