Between the Lines

After playing one game at home, the Panthers are back on the road to face the New York Rangers on Monday night. Florida is coming off a tough 5-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, a game in which they held a 3-1 lead in the 2nd period as a result of goals form Nick Bjugstad, Vincent Trocheck, and Teddy Purcell. The Red Wings scored 3 straight goals beginning at the end of the 2nd period up until an empty-netter in the 3rd. It became the second 3-goal lead forfeited by the Panthers in under a week as they had given one up against the Islanders just 5 days earlier.

Willie Mitchell is not traveling with the team on the 3-game road trip but there’s a chance he could join the team during it if he’s ready to play, said coach Gallant. Mitchell has missed over 2 months of action and hasn’t played since January 18th against the Oilers at home. Erik Gudbranson is expected to be out for another week at the very least with a foot injury. He was seen wearing a boot and on crutches on Saturday. MacKenzie seems to be in the same boat as Gudbranson and likely isn’t expected back soon.

The Rangers are coming off a 4-1 loss to the Sharks on Saturday. Their lone goal came from Dan Boyle as Henrik Lundqvist was pulled after making 43 saves on 47 shots in favor of Anti Raanta who stopped all 5 shots he faced. The Panthers last faced the Rangers on January 2nd at home when Logan Shaw, Vincent Trocheck, and Brandon Pirri each scored to secure Florida’s 8th straight victory.
