Between The Lines

The Panthers and Islanders are back at it for game 2 of the 1st round playoff series on Friday night at the BB&T Center. The two teams faced each other on Thursday night in what was mostly a back and forth goal-scoring affair which ended at 5-4 in favor of the Islanders. The Panthers held 3 different leads (1-0, 2-1, and 3-2) but the Islanders would go on to get 3 straight goals from John Tavares, Kyle Okposo, and Dylan Strome which would be enough secure the win despite Reilly Smith’s second goal of the night late in the 3rd. The Panthers struggled defensively and most of the Islander goals came off mental mistakes and rebounds not cleared away from the front of the net. The offensive attack of the Panthers was solid and dominating, and they were getting shots on goal all night long (46 in total), but it wasn’t enough to cover up for the errors that the Islanders took advantage of.

Greg McKegg, Quinton Howden, and Mike Matheson were healthy scratches for the Panthers while Steven Kampfer and Vincent Trocheck remained sidelined with ankle/leg injuries. Kampfer is expected to miss game 2 but did skate at the end of practice on Thursday morning, so he may not be too far off. Trocheck has yet to resume skating, however he’s no longer wearing so that could happen sooner rather than later. Roberto Luongo received IV treatment after Thursday’s game as a way to recover for Friday, meaning he’ll likely get the start once again. The word out of the morning skate is that Jakub Kindl could be scratched in favor of Mike Matheson who would be playing in his NHL playoffs debut.
