Between The Lines
The Red Wings come to town to face the Panthers after blowing a 3-1 lead by giving up 4 straight goals to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday. Thomas Vanek scored twice in his Red Wings debut, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the high-powered Lightning offense. The Panthers, meanwhile, won an OT thriller against the Devils in Thursday’s home opener at the BB&T Center thanks to a incredible shift by rookie defenseman Mike Matheson who threw down Damon Severson behind his own net, stole the puck, and fed it out in front to Aleksander Barkov who had a wide open net.
Jonathan Marchessault opened the scoring for the Panthers in his debut with the team after signing a 1-year deal in the offseason as a free-agent while the overhauled defensive core played in its first regular season game. Marchessault slotted in on the top line in place of Jonathan Huberdeau who will miss the next 3-4 months rehabbing a surgically-repaired Achilles’ tendon which was cut by the skate of Sergey Kalinin last Saturday at West Point. Denis Malgin made his NHL debut and was impressive in the absence of Nick Bjugstad who’s out for the next few weeks with a broken right hand.
Shane Harper also made his NHL debut on the 4th line after spending the past 7 years in the ECHL and AHL, and goaltender Roberto Luongo made 23 saves on 24 shots in his first regular season game after undergoing hip surgery in May.
