Between The Lines
After losing their second straight game this season to the Capitals on Thursday, the Panthers will face the Colorado Avalanche at home with the hopes of redeeming themselves. Mike Matheson scored his 2nd career goal while Jaromir Jagr scored his 750th, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Capitals tallied 4 goals en route to their 3rd straight victory. Jussi Jokinen received a high stick to the face late in the 3rd period and did not return, and Gerard Gallant said the veteran forward also “tweaked his knee” at the World Cup, so the Panthers called up forward Kyle Rau from the AHL on Friday in preparation for the fact that Jokinen may not play on Saturday.
The Avalanche are coming off a 4-0 shutout of the Lightning on Saturday night in which goaltender Semyon Varlamov made 27 saves on 27 shots with a two-goal performance from Matt Duchene and two more markers from Andreas Martinsen and Carl Soderberg.
The Panthers have been helped this season by a penalty kill that is a perfect 8-for-8 while allowing just 1 shot on net and 4 attempted shots in total. The power play got going with 1 goal on 4 chances on Saturday and the Avalanche will enter the game with the 26th-worst penalty kill (69.2%).
